How we scored

We researched and scored 14 text-to-video tools on the same three criteria: quality (40% of the total), ease of use (30%), and value for money (30%). The full breakdown of how each category is weighted lives on our methodology page. Every score below comes from that same rubric, so the numbers are comparable across the whole field — no tool gets graded on a curve because of its name.

The winner: Kling AI 3.0

Kling AI 3.0 takes the top spot with a score of 89, the highest in our research. It’s also one of the cheapest options on this entire list, at roughly $6.99/month for the Standard plan, and it ships with 66 daily free credits — more breathing room than most competitors give you before you have to pay for anything.

What separates it from the rest of the field: native 4K output and native audio generation. Most tools in this ranking make you choose one or bolt on a second service for the other. Kling gives you both in the same subscription, at a price that undercuts tools scoring twenty or thirty points lower. The one place it doesn’t lead: ease of use trails the tools built specifically for first-timers, so there’s a small learning curve before the output matches the score.

The surprise: Google didn’t win

Google Veo 3.1 has the best native audio in our entire research set and top-tier photorealism to go with it. On raw output alone, it’s easy to assume this is the winner before you even open the comparison. It finished third, at 74 points.

Two things hold it back from the top: consumer access is currently US-only, which rules out a large share of potential users before they can even try it, and the free tier is limited compared to what the top two tools offer. Great output isn’t worth much if the door is locked for part of your audience, or if testing it costs real money from the very first generation. Score-wise, that’s enough to drop a technically brilliant tool to third place.

The other surprise: quality alone doesn’t save you

Two more tools are worth mentioning here, even though they didn’t make our ranked list of 14 — because what happened to their scores says a lot about how we grade. OpenAI Sora 2 scored just 35 in our research, despite genuinely excellent narrative quality that, frame for frame, competes with anything else in this space. The reason for the low score has nothing to do with output: the consumer app was shut down on April 26, 2026, and the API itself is scheduled to sunset on September 24, 2026. A tool with a countdown timer already running isn’t one we can put in front of you as a serious option, no matter how good a demo clip looks today.

Hailuo AI (MiniMax) scored 38, and for a different reason. It offers strong quality at a genuinely budget-friendly price — around $14.99/month, with a free tier available — which on paper should put it mid-pack. But it’s currently facing active copyright litigation from Disney, Universal, and Warner Bros., and a motion to dismiss that case was denied in May 2026. If you’re generating anything for commercial use, that’s a real, live risk sitting underneath an otherwise appealing subscription.

Both cases are a reminder that our scoring isn’t only about what a tool can generate on its best day. Legal stability and whether the product will still exist next quarter count too, and they can sink a score just as fast as weak output ever could.

The also-rans, grouped

For professionals

Runway Gen-4 scored 80, second overall, and it’s the clear pick if you need real editing control rather than just generation. Motion Brush, camera control, and inpainting give it the deepest toolset in this entire category, backed by strong character consistency across shots. The tradeoff: a steeper learning curve than anything else near the top of the list, and credits that burn fast if you lean heavily on image-to-video work.

For beginners

Pika Labs is the most beginner-friendly tool in the whole ranking. It has a genuine free-forever tier of 80 credits a month, plus the viral Pikaffects that made it a social-media staple. Output quality is mid-tier and the value drops off once you’re generating at real volume, but as a first AI video tool, it’s hard to beat the on-ramp.

Multi-model aggregators

If you’d rather not commit to a single engine, Pollo AI, Higgsfield AI, and Luma all bundle multiple models into one subscription. Pollo gives you access to Kling, Veo, Runway, and Sora from a single account. Higgsfield leans hard into cinematic output, with 70+ camera presets across 15+ models. Luma bundles several engines with strong cinematic lighting and chainable sequences for product work. The catch across all three: you’re paying an aggregator premium on top of the underlying models, and it shows up directly in each tool’s value score.

Which one should you pick?

• Best all-around, budget included: Kling AI 3.0 — the highest score in our research, at the lowest price among the leaders.
• You need real editing control: Runway Gen-4 — the deepest toolset here, worth the learning curve if precision matters more than speed.
• You’re just starting out: Pika Labs — a genuine free-forever tier and the easiest workflow in the ranking.

The bottom line

Brand recognition doesn’t appear anywhere in our scoring rubric, and that’s deliberate. Kling wins because of what it actually delivers at its price point, not because of who built it — and Sora’s name recognition couldn’t rescue a product on a shutdown timeline.
