Descript Adds Claude Fable 5 to Underlord’s Model Picker
Descript’s August 5, 2026 changelog confirms Claude Fable 5 is now selectable inside Underlord for paid self-serve and Enterprise users, giving editors access to Anthropic’s heaviest reasoning model for the toughest editing prompts.
What happened
Descript has added Claude Fable 5 to the model picker inside Underlord, its AI co-editor. The change is documented in a Descript changelog entry titled “Release round-up—August 5th, 2026,” which lists a run of features shipped that week, including smoother jump-cut regeneration, scheduled recording Rooms, and draw-to-edit image swaps. The entry states that Fable 5 is now available as a premium model for paid self-serve and Enterprise, and that users can open the model picker and choose it for Underlord and the AI tools when a job calls for the heavier model.
Descript’s own help documentation confirms the model now sits in the picker alongside other Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google options. The current list includes Auto (Descript’s choice), Claude Fable 5, Claude Haiku 4.5, Claude Sonnet 5, several Sonnet and Opus variants, GPT 5.4 and 5.5, and Gemini 3.1 Pro and 3.5 Flash. Users switch models by clicking the model selector, described as a cube icon near the bottom of the Underlord chat window, and premium models are restricted to paid plans.
Fable 5 itself is not new. Anthropic released it on June 9, 2026, as what the company called its most capable widely released model at the time, built for long-horizon agentic work, alongside a restricted sibling called Claude Mythos 5. The rollout was unusually turbulent: on Friday, June 12, the US government applied export controls to Fable 5 and Mythos 5, requiring Anthropic to restrict access to foreign nationals, and because the order took effect immediately with no reliable way to verify nationality in real time, Anthropic suspended access to both models for all users. Access resumed globally on July 1, 2026, after the export controls were lifted on June 30. Descript’s decision to add Fable 5 as a selectable Underlord model on August 5 came roughly five weeks after that access was fully restored, and about eight weeks before Anthropic itself moved on to Fable 5.1 in early September 2026.
Why it matters for video creators
Underlord is Descript’s agentic editing assistant, built to take plain-language instructions and turn them into timeline actions rather than just chat responses. Descript has been steadily expanding which model handles that reasoning since it first shipped a model picker in late September 2025 with Claude Sonnet 4.5. A Claude Platform case study on Descript describes how the company now routes different Underlord tasks to different Claude tiers: Sonnet models as the default for most users, Opus for enterprise customers who prioritize quality, and Haiku for fast, iterative sessions. Fable 5 slots in above Opus in that hierarchy as the heaviest option.
For creators, the practical benefit is optionality on harder jobs. Anthropic positions Fable 5 for demanding, long-horizon reasoning rather than quick turnaround work. The company shipped it as its most capable, widely released model, built for long-horizon agentic work. In an editing context, that could mean multi-step Underlord requests that touch many clips, complex restructuring prompts, or projects where a single instruction has to be interpreted correctly across a long transcript without much back-and-forth. Descript’s own framing in the changelog — that Fable 5 is for “when a job calls for the heavier model” — points to the same idea: it is not meant to replace faster models for routine cuts, but to be reached for on the jobs where getting it right the first time matters more than speed.
What it does not solve
Adding a model to a picker does not change several structural realities that creators should weigh before reaching for Fable 5 inside Descript. First, cost and access are uneven. Descript’s changelog specifies the model is available for paid self-serve and Enterprise plans, not free or entry-level tiers. On Anthropic’s own platform, Fable 5 carries premium API pricing, and its plan-level availability has shifted multiple times since June: starting July 20, Max and Team Premium subscribers received Fable 5 as a permanent subscription feature at 50% of weekly limits, while Pro and Team Standard subscribers instead received a one-time $100 usage credit before falling back to API billing at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. Descript does not publish its own per-model credit rates for Underlord in the changelog, but the underlying model’s cost profile is a factor worth understanding before assuming heavier automatically means better value.
Second, Underlord’s own documentation is candid about its limits regardless of which model powers it. Descript’s help center notes the AI tools are designed to be helpful, fast, and flexible but don’t always know when they’re out of their depth, and Underlord might overpromise, make incorrect assumptions, or follow a user into workflows it isn’t equipped to complete, which can be frustrating on a deadline. Swapping in a more capable underlying model does not remove that agentic uncertainty, and Descript separately warns that Underlord is non-deterministic, meaning the same prompt can cost different amounts on different runs, with all such costs tracked under Underlord in the account’s usage tab.
Third, Fable 5 carries its own safety behavior that Underlord users inherit. Anthropic’s documentation describes Fable 5’s headline change for integrations as including safety classifiers that can decline requests, a feature its restricted sibling Mythos 5 does not have. That means some prompts routed to Fable 5 inside Descript could be refused outright in a way that a different model in the picker would simply attempt.
Where it fits today
The addition fits a pattern rather than marking a standalone leap. Descript has treated its model picker as a running list since it debuted, adding new frontier options from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google as they become available, and inviting users to compare results rather than pushing one default. An engineer on the team described the original picker’s origin plainly: “We’ve wanted to add it for a very long time,” says Ajay Arasanipalai, one of the engineers on the team that shipped this. Fable 5’s arrival in the picker four months later is consistent with that stated approach of folding in new Anthropic releases as they clear Anthropic’s own rollout turbulence.
For creators deciding whether to use it, the sensible framing is task-based rather than default: Fable 5 is one more premium option for the hardest Underlord prompts on paid Descript plans, sitting next to Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, GPT, and Gemini choices that already cover faster or cheaper work. It does not change what Underlord can and cannot do inside a Descript project, and it does not remove the cost and reliability caveats Descript already applies to its AI features generally.
