Bottom line

Boords is built around client approval rather than generation: frame-level commenting, versioning and no-signup review links are its clearest strength, backed by AI storyboard and image generation plus an automatic animatic editor. It is a planning tool, not a path to finished video, and its free tier is limited to 10 AI images and 5 storyboards.

  • Video agencies, animation studios and brand teams whose bottleneck is client approval, not drawing
  • Teams that need frame-level commenting, versioning and no-signup client review links
  • Anyone who wants AI storyboard generation paired with an automatic animatic editor and MP4 export

Not for

  • Anyone expecting a path from storyboard straight to finished video — Boords is a planning-only tool, per multiple independent reviews
  • Solo creators on a tight budget who need more than 10 AI images or 5 storyboards without paying
  • Teams that need dependable, consistent AI image output — reviewers note it can be inconsistent

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Frame-level commenting, versioning and password-protected, no-signup client review links — the tool’s core strength
  • Automatic animatic editor with subtitles, exporting to MP4
  • Exports to PDF, MP4, Excel, DOCX and After Effects, plus a public API and webhooks on Pro and above
  • Boords’ own survey of 272,000 US filmmakers found 52.4% rank ease of use as their top priority, and independent reviews (DomoAI, Storyflow, mStudio) consistently praise the collaboration workflow

Cons

  • No path from storyboard to finished video — it stops at planning, per multiple independent reviews
  • AI image output quality is noted as inconsistent by reviewers
  • AI image generation is paid-only; the free tier is capped at 10 AI images and 5 storyboards

Our verdict

Boords, built by the founders of the London animation studio Animade and running since 2015, converts scripts into storyboard frames and generates AI images, but its real differentiator is the layer built on top of that: frame-level commenting, versioning and password-protected, no-signup client review links. That positions it less as a generative storyboard tool and more as a review-and-approval platform for agencies and studios whose actual bottleneck, per Boords’ own survey of 272,000 US filmmakers, is getting a client to say yes — 52.4% of respondents ranked ease of use as their top priority.

An automatic animatic editor with subtitles and MP4 export, plus exports to PDF, Excel, DOCX and After Effects and a public API on Pro and above, round out a genuinely deep collaboration toolkit. Independent reviews from DomoAI, Storyflow and mStudio consistently praise that collaboration workflow and the clean interface.

The honest caveat, echoed across those same independent reviews, is that Boords has no path from storyboard to finished video — it is explicitly a planning tool. Reviewers also note the AI image output can be inconsistent, and image generation itself is paid-only, with the free tier capped at 10 AI images and 5 storyboards. If you need the storyboard to become an actual video inside the same platform, Katalist is worth comparing.
