ElevenLabs Review
One audio stack for voiceover, music and SFX — with music licensing cleared via Merlin and Kobalt.
Try ElevenLabs →Bottom line
ElevenLabs scores near the top of Music & SFX not for having the best songwriting, but for combining strong audio quality with the cleanest commercial-rights story in the category: Eleven Music is cleared via Merlin and Kobalt licensing deals, and the same credit pool covers voiceover, sound effects and a Video-to-Sound generator. The trade-off is a single shared credit pool across every product, and Eleven Music on self-serve plans excludes film, TV, radio and multi-platform commercial games.
Quick facts
Who it’s for
Best for
- Creators who want voiceover, music and sound effects in one account under one credit system
- Projects that need Video-to-Sound — auto-generated SFX matched to an uploaded video
- Anyone prioritizing legal safety over maximum songwriting depth
Not for
- Heavy multi-product users — one shared credit pool means using Sound Effects depletes what’s left for Music
- Film, TV, radio or multi-platform game work with Eleven Music, unless you move to an Enterprise Music plan
- Music-related SFX prompts like percussion or synths, which reviewers say underperform relative to Foley and ambience
Pros and cons
Pros
- Text-to-speech in 29+ languages plus Eleven Music and Sound Effects V2 (48kHz, up to 30 seconds, seamless looping) in one platform
- Video-to-Sound auto-generates SFX matched to an uploaded video
- Music licensed via Merlin and Kobalt — one of the few AI music tools explicitly cleared for commercial use
- Rated the best standalone AI voice platform in 2026 by BIGVU, Cekura and StackSheriff
Cons
- Free plan has no commercial rights and requires ElevenLabs attribution
- Single shared credit pool across TTS, music and SFX — the most common complaint in reviews
- Eleven Music on self-serve plans excludes film, TV, radio and multi-platform commercial games
- You may not resell the tools or build a competing product under the ToS
The free tier’s 10,000 credits are enough to test text-to-speech, Eleven Music and Sound Effects V2 side by side before deciding which product matters most for your workflow.

Our verdict
ElevenLabs built its reputation on voice realism, and that same audio engineering shows up in Eleven Music and Sound Effects V2. Eleven Music generates from natural-language prompts, Sound Effects V2 produces 48kHz clips up to 30 seconds with seamless looping, and Video-to-Sound auto-matches SFX to an uploaded clip — useful for video creators who want music and sound design without leaving one tool. Per ElevenLabs’ official blog, it raised $500 million in a Series D round led by Sequoia Capital in February 2026 at an $11 billion valuation, and per its company blog it surpassed $500 million ARR within the first four months of 2026.
The commercial-rights structure is the differentiator that lifts ElevenLabs above most pure AI music generators: Starter and above include a royalty-free commercial license, and Eleven Music itself is cleared through Merlin and Kobalt deals — a meaningfully lower legal-risk position than Suno or Udio. The catch is the shared credit pool: Eleven Music costs roughly 900 credits per minute and Sound Effects about 200 credits per generation, so heavy use of one product measurably eats into what’s left for the others. Reviewers consistently flag this as the main friction point.
